The Central Government has announced major top-level appointments in India’s defence leadership, naming new chiefs for both the armed forces and the navy. Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani has been appointed as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ends on May 30, 2026. At the same time, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will become the next Chief of Naval Staff, replacing Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi after his retirement on May 31, 2026.
According to the government announcement, Lieutenant General Raja Subramani will also serve as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs after assuming office. A decorated officer with more than 35 years of military service, he began his career after graduating from the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in 1985.
Over the years, Subramani held several important operational and intelligence positions across India, including assignments in Jammu and Kashmir, the Eastern Command, and Army Headquarters. He also served as India’s Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan and later became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command in 2023. In 2024, he took charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Army Staff before being appointed Military Advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat.
For his distinguished service, he has received some of India’s highest military honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been chosen as the next head of the Indian Navy. Commissioned into the Navy in 1987, Swaminathan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and several prestigious military institutions in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
During his nearly four-decade-long naval career, he commanded several major warships, including INS Mysore and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. He also played a key role in naval training, operational safety, and Western Fleet operations. Currently serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, Swaminathan has been recognised with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for his contributions to national security.
These appointments come at a crucial time as India continues to strengthen its defence preparedness and military leadership across all three armed forces.
