UPDATE: Damaging Winds Expected as Thunderstorms Move Through Piedmont Region Thursday Night
An updated severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh, North Carolina, at 9:48 p.m. Thursday, remaining in effect until 10:15 p.m. The warning covers Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, and Stanly counties, where residents are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Forecasters are warning of the potential for damaging straight-line winds accompanying the storms, along with frequent lightning and heavy rainfall. These conditions may lead to downed trees, localised power outages, and hazardous travel across affected areas.
Authorities are advising people in the warned counties to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure any loose outdoor objects that could be picked up by strong winds.
Lightning Safety Reminder
The National Weather Service emphasizes that lightning is one of the most dangerous aspects of thunderstorms. In the United States, lightning strikes the ground about 25 million times each year, with most activity occurring during the summer months. On average, it causes around 20 fatalities annually.
Risk increases significantly as a thunderstorm approaches. The likelihood of a strike peaks when the storm is directly overhead and gradually decreases as it moves away.
Officials recommend the “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors” rule—if you can hear thunder, you are already close enough to be struck by lightning. Staying inside a substantial building or a fully enclosed vehicle offers the best protection.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring local weather updates as conditions may change quickly throughout the evening.
