17 Horses Killed in Devastating Barn Fire at Saratoga Casino Hotel Harness Track
A tragic barn fire at the Saratoga Casino Hotel Harness Track in Saratoga Springs, New York, claimed the lives of 17 horses and left another injured in the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to fire officials and casino authorities. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local racing and equestrian community.
Fire Broke Out in Early Morning Hours
The fire reportedly started around 2:30 a.m. in the backstretch barn area of the harness racing facility. Emergency responders rushed to the scene after receiving alerts of heavy smoke and flames spreading inside one of the barns housing racehorses.
Despite rapid response efforts, the fire intensified quickly within the structure, making evacuation extremely difficult for the animals inside.
Horses Lost in the Incident
Out of the 17 horses that died in the blaze:
- 11 horses belonged to trainer Robyn Mongiardo
- 6 horses were owned by trainer Timothy Benson
One additional horse sustained injuries but survived. Officials have not yet released details regarding its current condition.
No Human Casualties Reported
Authorities confirmed that no trainers, stable workers, or emergency personnel were injured or killed in the incident. Quick action from staff and first responders helped ensure that human safety was maintained throughout the emergency.
Fire Contained to Single Barn
The Saratoga Casino Hotel stated that the fire was successfully contained before it could spread to neighboring barns or facilities. Only one barn was directly impacted, preventing what could have been a much larger disaster.
Officials and racing staff worked together to evacuate horses from nearby barns and secure the broader backstretch area, which typically houses around 350 horses during active racing periods.
Racing Community in Shock
Saratoga Casino Hotel CEO Sam Gerrity expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that the entire racing community is grieving the loss.
He emphasized appreciation for the rapid response of security teams, firefighters, and racing personnel who helped prevent further loss of life.
Investigation Underway
At this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Fire investigators are currently examining the site to determine how the blaze began and whether any safety failures contributed to its rapid spread.
Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, and a full report is expected after the investigation concludes.
A Major Loss for Harness Racing Community
The incident has highlighted the risks associated with large-scale equine facilities, where hundreds of valuable and highly trained racehorses are stabled closely together.
For trainers, owners, and caretakers, the emotional and financial impact of the loss is expected to be significant.
