Tata Sierra iCNG Spotted Testing on Public Roads Ahead of Launch
Tata Motors appears to be expanding the powertrain lineup of its newly launched Sierra SUV. After introducing the much-awaited Sierra earlier this year and commencing customer deliveries, the automaker is now reportedly working on a CNG-powered version of the SUV. A test mule of the Tata Sierra iCNG has recently been spotted undergoing road tests, hinting at a possible launch in the coming months.
Images shared by automotive portal RushLane show a camouflaged Tata Sierra being tested on public roads. The SUV is finished in a striking blue paint shade that is currently not offered on the production-spec Sierra. The colour resembles the blue shade available on the Tata Safari, suggesting Tata could introduce new colour options in the future.
One of the key highlights of the test vehicle is the emissions testing equipment mounted at the rear. The presence of this equipment strongly indicates that Tata is evaluating the SUV's emissions performance, likely as part of the development process for the upcoming iCNG variant.
Tata Motors has been actively promoting its twin-cylinder iCNG technology across multiple models, including the Punch, Altroz, Nexon, and Tiago. The Sierra iCNG is expected to benefit from the same advanced dual-cylinder setup, which allows for better boot space utilization while delivering improved fuel efficiency and lower running costs.
The Sierra currently comes with petrol and diesel engine options, while the electric version of the SUV is also expected to debut later this month. The addition of a CNG variant would further strengthen Tata's strategy of offering multiple powertrain choices to customers, catering to diverse buyer preferences.
Although Tata Motors has not officially confirmed the Sierra iCNG, the recent spy shots suggest that development is progressing steadily. Once launched, the Sierra iCNG could become an attractive option for buyers seeking the practicality of an SUV combined with the affordability and efficiency of CNG fuel.
More details regarding engine specifications, fuel efficiency figures, and launch timelines are expected to emerge as testing continues in the coming weeks.
