Fuel Rationing: Central Government Limits Petrol and Diesel Sales to Prevent Hoarding

Nagaur (Bhaskar News): In a major move to stabilise the fuel supply chain and crack down on artificial scarcity, the Central Government's Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has implemented strict new guidelines targeting petrol and diesel distribution across the country.

The decision comes amid a sudden spike in fuel demand and widespread reports of panic buying and speculative hoarding by unauthorised distributors and commercial consumers. To ensure that everyday commuters and essential services face no disruptions, the ministry has introduced a mandatory cap on the volume of fuel a single consumer can purchase at any given time.

Why the Government Implemented Fuel Caps

According to senior officials within the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the current domestic oil reserves are completely stable, but panic buying has caused temporary stockouts at several retail outlets.

"There is no actual shortage of fuel in the country. However, some elements are spreading rumors to hoard fuel and create an artificial crisis. Setting a strict per-vehicle and per-person limit will immediately halt this practice and ensure fair distribution for everyone," a ministry representative stated.

The unexpected rush at petrol pumps had recently begun disrupting normal transport routines, particularly in regional hubs like Nagaur, prompting local administrations to coordinate with oil marketing companies (OMCs) for immediate intervention.

Key Highlights of the New Fuel Guidelines

Under the newly issued directives, strict limits have been placed on both retail consumers and heavy commercial vehicles.

1. Daily Caps on Fuel Purchases

  • Two-Wheelers: Allowed a maximum purchase of up to 10 litres per day.

  • Four-Wheelers (Private Cars): Capped at a maximum of 30 to 40 litres per visit.

  • Heavy Commercial Vehicles (Trucks & Buses): Limited to 100 litres at a single fuel station to ensure long-haul transport remains operational without draining local pump inventories.

2. Strict Ban on Loose Fuel Sales

To eliminate the risk of hoarding, petrol pumps have been strictly prohibited from dispensing petrol or diesel into loose containers, plastic bottles, or external drums without a special administrative permit.

3. Monitoring and Enforcement

Local district authorities and food supply departments have been directed to conduct surprise inspections at fuel stations. Any petrol pump found violating these ration limits or facilitating bulk hoarding will face immediate cancellation of their retail license.

Impact on Common Consumers and Logistics

While the sudden implementation of fuel limits may cause temporary queues at retail outlets, industry experts believe the move will bring much-needed relief within 48 hours. By cutting off bulk hoarders from standard retail pumps, fuel supplies are expected to normalise rapidly, ensuring that daily commuters, farmers, and emergency services have uninterrupted access to fuel.

Local transport associations have welcomed the move, noting that a verified limit is far better than facing completely dry fuel stations due to panic buying.
