Nepal is in the grip of widespread unrest as youth-led demonstrations shake the nation. The protests began after the government imposed a ban on major social media platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube. Although the ban was later lifted, discontent had already spread among Gen Z, who voiced their anger over corruption, unemployment, and lack of accountability in governance.

Attack on Finance Minister
In one of the most shocking moments of the unrest, Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was physically attacked on the streets. Viral videos showed him being chased, kicked, and beaten by protesters before security forces rescued him. The incident became a symbol of the widening gap between Nepal’s political elite and the country’s frustrated youth.

Escalation of Violence
The protests soon turned into large-scale violence. Demonstrators stormed Parliament, vandalized government buildings, and even set fire to the homes of top leaders, including the Prime Minister and President. The Supreme Court was also targeted. At least 19 people have been killed in clashes, and hundreds more have been injured, adding to the gravity of the crisis.

Prime Minister’s Resignation
Amid growing chaos, Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli announced his resignation. He admitted that the unrest had reached a breaking point and that political compromise was necessary to restore peace. His resignation, however, has not satisfied the protesters, who are demanding systemic reforms and greater transparency in governance.

Role of Gen Z Movement
The demonstrations highlight a deep generational divide in Nepal’s politics. Young people view the temporary social media ban not only as censorship but also as a broader attempt to suppress their voices. For Gen Z, this movement is about demanding change, accountability, and inclusion in shaping the nation’s future.

What Lies Ahead
Nepal now faces an uncertain political future. The resignation of the Prime Minister may create opportunities for reform, but without concrete steps to tackle corruption, unemployment, and poor governance, the unrest is unlikely to subside. The violent attack on the Finance Minister underscores just how fragile the situation has become and the urgent need for dialogue between leaders and the people.
