Parliament Special Sitting LIVE: Lok Sabha to Vote on Women’s Quota Amendment Bills Today

The Lok Sabha is set to hold a crucial vote on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 4 p.m. on three significant bills, including amendments to the women’s reservation law and the establishment of a delimitation commission. The special parliamentary sitting has drawn national attention due to its potential impact on representation and electoral boundaries.

According to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, voting on the three bills will take place as scheduled in the House. The proposed legislation aims to modify the existing women’s quota framework and initiate a fresh delimitation exercise to redraw parliamentary constituencies.

On Thursday, April 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Lok Sabha, emphasising that the proposed changes will ensure the proportional representation of southern states remains protected. Amit Shah assured members that the implementation of the women’s reservation law, along with an increased strength of the Lok Sabha after delimitation, will not reduce southern states’ influence in Parliament.

He further stated that the number of Lok Sabha seats across the five southern states is expected to rise from 129 to 195. This would slightly increase their overall share from 23.76% to 23.87%, reinforcing their continued representation in the national legislature.

Mr. Shah is also scheduled to deliver the formal reply during today’s debate on the three bills, ahead of the final voting process. The outcome of this session is expected to play a key role in shaping future electoral and reservation policies in India.
