Heatwave Intensifies Across Himachal Pradesh as Temperatures Soar Above Normal

Severe heatwave conditions continued to grip several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday as temperatures rose significantly above seasonal averages across the mid and low hill regions. The India Meteorological Department issued orange and yellow alerts for May 22, warning residents about rising temperatures and prolonged dry weather conditions in multiple districts.

Una remained the hottest location in the state, recording a scorching maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius, which was nearly 5.8 degrees above normal. Neri followed with 41 degrees Celsius, while Sundernagar registered 39.9 degrees Celsius.

Several other regions also experienced intense heat throughout the day. Mandi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius, while Nahan touched 38.7 degrees Celsius. Kangra witnessed temperatures reaching 38.4 degrees Celsius, adding to the discomfort caused by the ongoing heatwave.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, maximum temperatures across most weather stations in the state were recorded between 4 and 5 degrees Celsius above normal levels. Dry weather conditions persisted across Himachal Pradesh over the past 24 hours, with no rainfall reported from any district.

Even traditionally cooler tourist destinations witnessed unusually warm conditions. Shimla recorded a maximum temperature of 30.5 degrees Celsius, which was 5.5 degrees above normal, while Dharamshala touched 36.1 degrees Celsius. Manali also experienced warmer weather, recording a maximum temperature of 28.6 degrees Celsius.

Night temperatures also remained unusually high across many parts of the state. Palampur recorded a minimum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, indicating little relief from the heat even during nighttime.

Weather experts have advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The continuing rise in temperatures has also increased concerns over water shortages, forest fire risks, and health-related issues in several districts of Himachal Pradesh.
