Murder Convict Who Jumped Parole Arrested After Working in Bollywood

A murder convict who had been absconding for nearly 12 years after jumping parole was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Wednesday near a metro station in Ahmedabad. The accused, identified as Hemant Modi, allegedly created a completely new identity and worked in both Bollywood and Gujarati cinema while evading authorities.

According to police officials, the 53-year-old was serving a life sentence at Mehsana District Jail in connection with a 2005 murder and rioting case registered in Ahmedabad. In 2014, he was granted a 30-day parole by the Gujarat High Court but failed to return to prison after the parole period ended.

Authorities stated that the Gujarat High Court officially declared him a parole absconder in July 2014 after he disappeared. Over the next decade, Modi reportedly managed to avoid arrest by changing his identity and blending into the entertainment industry.

Investigators revealed that during his years on the run, Hemant Modi maintained an active presence in the film industry and appeared in several major productions. Police said he worked in Bollywood films, including Thugs of Hindostan starring Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. He was also reportedly seen in Jayeshbhai Jordaar, featuring Ranveer Singh.

Police officials said Modi’s public appearances and professional work in films made the case particularly unusual, as he allegedly managed to maintain a visible lifestyle while remaining outside the reach of law enforcement agencies for years.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch tracked him down after receiving specific intelligence inputs regarding his movements near a metro station in the city. Following his arrest, officials confirmed that he would be handed back to Mehsana District Jail authorities to serve the remainder of his life sentence.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the accused’s unexpected connection with the entertainment industry and the length of time he managed to evade arrest despite appearing in high-profile film productions.
