Earthquake Tremors Felt Across North India After 5.9 Magnitude Quake Hits Afghanistan
Earthquake tremors were widely felt across several parts of North India late Friday night after a strong 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan’s seismically active Hindu Kush region at a depth of 150 km. The tremors were experienced in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, and nearby regions, prompting many residents in apartments and office buildings to step outside as a precaution. According to seismic authorities, the earthquake occurred at approximately 9:42 PM IST, with the epicentre located near latitude 36.398°N and longitude 70.878°E in Afghanistan. Due to the considerable depth of the quake, the tremors travelled across a wide region and were also felt in several cities of Pakistan, including Islamabad and Lahore. Many people, especially those living on upper floors, reported ceiling fans, lights, and furniture shaking for a few seconds. While the tremors created brief panic and led to a rush of social media posts from affected residents, there were no immediate reports of damage in India. However, reports from Afghanistan said at least eight people died after a house collapsed in the outskirts of Kabul, highlighting the destructive impact near the epicentral zone. Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and any possible damage reports.
