Vijay Sethupathi Shines with New Film ‘Thalaivan Thalaivii’ and Bold Collaborations Ahead

Chennai: Acclaimed actor Vijay Sethupathi continues to make waves in the Indian film industry with a series of high-profile projects, beginning with the upcoming romantic-action drama Thalaivan Thalaivii, slated for theatrical release on July 25, 2025.

Directed by Pandiraj, the film reunites Sethupathi with actress Nithya Menen in what has been described as a raw and emotional narrative centered around a married couple navigating personal storms. The recently released trailer offers glimpses of a vibrant, chaotic restaurant where love, conflict, and personal transformation unfold.

"It’s impossible to imagine anyone else in her roles," Sethupathi said of Menen during the trailer launch, praising her as “irreplaceable” for the part of Perarasi. The duo had last appeared together in the 2022 Malayalam drama 19(1)(a).

Beyond the film, Sethupathi has been vocal about the growing culture of online trolling. Speaking at a pre-release event, he remarked,

“It’s their opinion, and we can always rectify and do better. Criticism can make us stronger.”

From Feud to Film: Reunion with Pandiraj
Interestingly, the actor and director Pandiraj had previously parted ways after a creative disagreement. However, the two patched up at a mutual friend’s birthday celebration, a moment that sparked the idea for Thalaivan Thalaivii.

Puri Jagannadh Project Underway
Adding to his busy slate, Sethupathi has begun filming a high-octane, pan-Indian action drama with director Puri Jagannadh. The yet-to-be-titled film, currently shooting in Hyderabad, also stars Tabu, Samyuktha Menon, and Duniya Vijay. Reports suggest the project is emotionally intense, promising a "raw and real" experience for audiences.

A Note on Family and Controversy
Sethupathi also recently addressed a viral social media incident involving his son Surya at the premiere of Surya’s debut film Phoenix. Responding to claims that a video of the event was forcefully removed online, Sethupathi said,

"If something like that happened, I truly apologize. It was not my intention to hurt anyone."
