IMD Monsoon Update: Kerala Onset Delay and Weather Outlook 2026

IMD updates monsoon forecast, indicating a possible delay in Kerala onset with weak initial rains expected and stronger activity after June 5–6, 2026.

IMD Monsoon Update: Kerala Onset Delay and Weather Outlook 2026

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its latest forecasting models, suggesting a possible delay and weaker initial phase for the southwest monsoon onset over Kerala. According to updated projections, the monsoon’s strengthening phase is now more likely to occur only after June 5–6, instead of building up earlier as previously expected.

Meteorological experts point out that the key upper-level wind systems, which are essential for a well-organised monsoon circulation over South India, are still not fully aligned. These wind patterns help transport moisture-rich air from the Indian Ocean towards the Indian landmass, triggering widespread and sustained rainfall. Without this strong atmospheric setup, the early monsoon flow is likely to remain inconsistent and weak.

Because of this delayed development, Kerala and adjoining regions may experience only scattered or light rainfall during the initial phase of monsoon arrival. The system is expected to remain relatively unstable before gradually gaining strength as atmospheric conditions improve over the southern peninsula. This transition phase is crucial, as it determines how quickly the monsoon can spread across other parts of India.

The southwest monsoon, which typically spans from June to September, is India’s primary rainfall season and plays a vital role in agriculture, groundwater recharge, and overall water availability. Any shift in its onset or intensity can have a direct impact on sowing operations, especially for kharif crops that depend heavily on timely rainfall.

With the revised outlook, farmers, agronomists, and policy planners are closely tracking further updates from IMD models. Even a short delay or weak onset can influence early agricultural planning, irrigation demand, and reservoir management strategies. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring evolving weather patterns over the coming days for clearer signals on monsoon progression.
