Supreme Court Pulls Up Jan Suraaj Party Over Bihar Poll Plea

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday strongly criticised the Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) for filing a writ petition seeking to annul the recently concluded Bihar Assembly elections. The party had alleged that the pre-poll announcement of a ₹10,000 cash dole for women amounted to a corrupt practice and disturbed the level playing field.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi questioned the party’s intent, remarking, “How many votes did your party secure? The people have rejected you in the elections. Are you now trying to use the judicial forum to gain publicity?”

The Jan Suraaj Party contested 238 assembly seats but failed to win even a single constituency, securing only 3.4% of the total vote share. Notably, in 68 constituencies, the party polled fewer votes than the ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) option.
