Bay Bridge Traffic Halted After Dirt Bike Takeover, 70 Seized

Traffic on the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge was brought to a standstill Sunday after a large group of dirt bike and ATV riders staged a takeover, prompting a major response from law enforcement.

According to the California Highway Patrol, dozens of riders initially crossed the bridge into San Francisco, where they were seen riding through city streets before attempting to head back eastbound across the bridge. Authorities quickly coordinated efforts to intercept the group.

In an effort to stop the riders from fleeing, officers temporarily shut down all eastbound lanes. Faced with the roadblock, many riders abandoned their vehicles directly on the bridge and fled on foot. Officials reported that more than 70 dirt bikes and ATVs were seized during the operation, and at least two individuals were taken into custody.

The situation escalated when one suspect attempted to evade capture by jumping into the water below. The Oakland Fire Department responded swiftly and rescued the individual.

The incident caused significant traffic delays, impacting commuters travelling out of San Francisco for several hours. Authorities worked to clear the bridge and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.

Officials from the Oakland Police Department stated that additional details, including potential charges and ongoing investigations, will be shared during a scheduled news conference on Monday.
