Bank Services Likely Hit on January 27 as Unions Call Nationwide Strike
Banking operations across several parts of the country may be disrupted on Tuesday, January 27, after public sector bank unions announced a nationwide strike to press for a five-day workweek.
The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents nine major bank employee unions. The unions say their demand for declaring all Saturdays as holidays, agreed upon during a wage settlement with the Indian Banks’ Association in March 2024, is yet to be implemented.
If the strike goes ahead, public sector banks such as SBI, PNB, and Bank of Baroda are expected to see disruptions in branch services, including cash transactions and cheque clearances. Private banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank are likely to function normally.
Conciliation talks with the Chief Labour Commissioner have failed to resolve the issue. While digital banking services are expected to continue, customers are advised to plan essential banking work in advance.
