Zero Tolerance for Crimes Against Women: Majhi
Cuttack: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday reiterated that his government follows a zero-tolerance approach towards crimes against women, asserting that all those involved in such offences have been arrested and sent to jail. He was speaking after unfurling the national flag during the 77th Republic Day celebrations here.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister assured women across the State of the government’s firm commitment to their safety and dignity. “I want to reassure the mothers and sisters of Odisha that our government is always vigilant about your security. Anyone who commits a crime against women will face strict punishment,” he said, adding that in cases of violence against women, all accused have been taken into custody.
Majhi made it clear that criminals involved in such offences would not receive any political protection. “Irrespective of political affiliation, caste, religion, or any other identity, those who commit crimes against women have only one place — jail,” he asserted, emphasizing that the government would show no leniency.
Highlighting the importance of women’s welfare in the State’s development, the Chief Minister said Odisha cannot progress unless women are safe and empowered. He noted that his government has accorded top priority to ensuring women’s safety along with protecting their dignity.
Referring to conviction rates, Majhi said cases related to crimes against women had a conviction rate of 9.2 per cent in 2022, which declined to 6.9 per cent in 2023. “It is encouraging that in the first six months of 2025, the conviction rate has risen to 41 per cent, and in June alone, it crossed 62 per cent,” he added.
