Xiaomi 17T Series to Feature Leica 5x Telephoto Camera

Xiaomi has officially confirmed that its upcoming Xiaomi 17T series will feature a Leica-tuned 5x telephoto camera on both the standard 17T and the 17T Pro models. This marks a significant shift in Xiaomi’s strategy, as advanced telephoto lenses are usually reserved for premium Pro variants in most smartphone lineups.

The Xiaomi 17T series is set to launch globally in Vienna on May 28, while the standard Xiaomi 17T will arrive in India on June 4. The launch is especially notable because it marks the return of Xiaomi’s T-series smartphones to India after the release of the Xiaomi 11T Pro in 2022.

The standout feature of the series is the new Leica-powered 5x telephoto camera with a 115mm equivalent focal length. Xiaomi claims the lens can deliver up to 10x “optical-quality” zoom using hybrid image processing technology, while AI Ultra Zoom support can extend zoom capability up to 120x. Although the company has not officially revealed the sensor resolution, several leaks suggest both models may use a 50MP telephoto sensor.

By offering the same 5x periscope-style telephoto camera on the standard model, Xiaomi is bringing flagship-level photography features to a wider audience. Xiaomi India has already started promoting the device with the tagline “The Telephoto Master,” highlighting the phone’s camera-focused positioning.

According to leaks, India is expected to receive only the standard Xiaomi 17T, while the 17T Pro may remain exclusive to global markets. The Xiaomi 17T is tipped to feature a triple rear camera setup consisting of a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP Leica telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultrawide camera.

The smartphone is also expected to include a 6.59-inch 1.5K LTPS display with a 144Hz refresh rate, offering smoother scrolling, gaming, and video performance. Under the hood, the device may run on the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra chipset paired with a large 6,500mAh battery. Support for 67W HyperCharge fast charging and IP68 water and dust resistance is also expected.

In terms of pricing, leaked European listings suggest the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage variant could start at around €749, which converts to roughly ₹71,000. However, industry experts believe the Indian pricing may be comparatively lower to better compete in the premium smartphone segment.

With Leica imaging technology, long-range zoom capabilities, and flagship-level specifications, the Xiaomi 17T series appears aimed at users looking for advanced smartphone photography features without stepping into ultra-premium pricing territory.
