ISRO to Allow Civilians in Gaganyaan Astronaut Batch 2

ISRO Opens Astronaut Programme to Civilians for Gaganyaan Missions

In a significant development, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to allow civilians to become astronauts for the first time. The proposal has been recommended by the ISRO Astronaut Selection Committee, marking a major step toward expanding participation in India’s human spaceflight programme.

As per the recommendation, the second batch of astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission will include a mix of candidates. This group is expected to consist of six Indian Air Force pilots along with four civilian specialists from STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) backgrounds. However, detailed eligibility criteria and the selection process are yet to be officially announced.

The first batch of astronauts, selected for the initial Gaganyaan launch, included only Air Force pilots. In contrast, the second batch is being designed to support future missions and scientific research, opening opportunities for qualified civilians to contribute to India’s space ambitions.

Selected candidates will undergo rigorous astronaut training, which is expected to last around four years, preparing them for space missions and advanced research activities. This move highlights ISRO’s growing focus on inclusivity and long-term human space exploration.
