IIT Roorkee Clarifies Admission Process for Students Below Eligibility Marks
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has issued a clarification regarding the admission process for candidates who do not meet the minimum Class 12 percentage requirement for admission into IITs through the JEE (Advanced) route.
Under the existing eligibility rules for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), candidates are generally required to secure at least 75% marks in Class 12 (or equivalent examinations) for General, OBC-NCL, and GEN-EWS categories. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the minimum requirement is 65% marks.
However, in its latest statement, IIT Roorkee clarified that students who fall short of these marks criteria will still be allowed to participate in the ongoing counselling and seat allocation process. This means that even if candidates do not meet the prescribed Class 12 percentage cutoff, they can still fill in their choices during counselling.
The institute further explained that seat allocation will be carried out based on JEE (Advanced) rank, ensuring that merit in the entrance examination remains the primary factor in admission decisions.
The clarification has brought relief to many aspirants who were uncertain about their eligibility status despite performing well in JEE (Advanced). It confirms that such candidates will not be immediately disqualified from the admission process solely due to Class 12 percentage shortfalls, as long as they are otherwise eligible and have qualified the entrance exam.
The JEE Advanced continues to serve as the primary gateway for undergraduate engineering admissions at IITs and several other top engineering institutions across India.
Officials reiterated that counselling participation does not guarantee admission, but ensures that eligible candidates remain in consideration until seat allotment based on rank and availability.
Overall, the clarification aims to streamline the admission process and reduce confusion among candidates, while maintaining academic standards through the JEE (Advanced) ranking system.
