Rain, Thunderstorms Lash Delhi; IMD Issues Red Alert

New Delhi:
Several parts of the national capital witnessed heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Red Alert for multiple areas. The weather office also warned of possible hailstorms over the next few hours.

The Red Alert, issued at 11:10 am, covers North West Delhi, West Delhi, South West Delhi, Outer North Delhi, and parts of Central Delhi. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary movement.

Rainfall Recorded Across the City

Light to moderate rainfall was recorded in several parts of Delhi during the morning hours. According to official data between 8:30 am and 11:30 am:

Palam received 3.4 mm of rainfall

Ridge recorded 3.0 mm

Pitampura logged 2.0 mm

Janakpuri saw 1.5 mm, Mayur Vihar 1.0 mm, and Ayanagar 0.1 mm

Safdarjung and Lodi Road reported only trace rainfall
Rainfall data from Pusa and Najafgarh was unavailable.

Orange Alert for More Areas

The IMD also issued Orange Alerts for North East Delhi, East Delhi, and Shahdara, while parts of North and South Delhi remain under weather watch. An orange alert indicates residents should stay alert and prepared for worsening conditions.

What’s Next?

The weather department warned that light to moderate rainfall is likely at most places, with isolated heavy spells, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, and hail.

Thunderstorm activity with moderate to heavy rainfall was reported in isolated areas such as Narela, Bawana, Alipur, Kanjhawala, Rohini, Mundaka, and Jafarpur.

The IMD forecast a generally cloudy sky, with spells of rain and thunderstorms expected during the early morning to forenoon hours.

Temperature Dip Expected

The maximum temperature is likely to drop to around 19°C, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 8°C on Tuesday morning.

Notably, Delhi last experienced a similar intense wet spell on January 23, when the city recorded its highest January rainfall in two years, leading to a sharp dip in temperatures and temporary relief from high pollution levels.

“Bad weather over Delhi-NCR is likely during the next two to three hours,” the IMD said.
