When Lord Shiva returned, Ganesha stopped him as per his mother’s order. Angry, Shiva cut off Ganesha’s head. Seeing Parvati’s grief, Shiva promised to bring him back to life. He placed the head of an elephant on Ganesha, making him the elephant-headed god we worship today.
