In a significant breakthrough for counter-terror efforts in the Kashmir Valley, security forces neutralized three terrorists during Operation Mahadev, including Suleiman Shah, a wanted militant believed to be the mastermind behind several attacks in the Pahalgam region, sources confirmed.
According to officials, a joint team of the Indian Army, CRPF, and Jammu & Kashmir Police launched a cordon-and-search operation late Sunday night in the dense forest areas near Pahalgam after receiving specific intelligence inputs regarding militant movement.
During the operation, the hiding terrorists opened fire, triggering a fierce gunfight. After several hours of intense exchange, all three terrorists were gunned down. One of them was later identified as Suleiman Shah, a top commander associated with a Pakistan-backed terror outfit. The identities of the other two militants are being verified.
Suleiman Shah had been under surveillance for months and was allegedly involved in planning and executing multiple ambushes and attacks on security forces in South Kashmir. He was also believed to have played a key role in radicalizing and recruiting local youth into militancy.
Officials recovered a cache of arms, ammunition, and encrypted communication devices from the site. The search operation continued through the morning to rule out the presence of additional threats in the area.
A senior security official described the operation as "a major success in dismantling a key network operating in the Pahalgam region." He added, “Suleiman Shah’s elimination is a significant blow to the militant infrastructure that was trying to revive in South Kashmir.”
No civilian casualties were reported during the encounter. Authorities have temporarily suspended mobile internet services in nearby areas as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
Local residents in the area cooperated with the forces, and additional security has been deployed to ensure peace in the region.
Operation Mahadev marks another successful chapter in ongoing efforts to restore stability and curb militancy in Jammu & Kashmir.
