HII Partners with Path Robotics for AI Welding in Shipbuilding

HII has partnered with Path Robotics to integrate AI-powered welding systems into shipbuilding operations. The collaboration aims to boost automation, improve productivity, and strengthen national security capabilities.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 17, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — HII and Path Robotics have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore the integration of advanced physical artificial intelligence (AI) welding systems into shipbuilding operations. This collaboration is expected to improve production efficiency, reinforce the maritime industrial base, and support workforce development.

Under the agreement, both companies will focus on three key areas: developing autonomous shipbuilding capabilities, training skilled personnel to expand automation, and creating an intellectual property framework for AI-powered welding systems. In addition, they

will jointly pursue research and development to integrate Path’s physical AI models with other innovative technologies used in HII’s ship construction programs, including its ROMULUS unmanned surface vehicle line.

By combining automation, AI-driven welding, and advanced manufacturing tools, the partnership aims to strengthen the welding workforce, streamline structural production, and accelerate overall output. These efforts are designed to support national security goals and enhance shipbuilding capabilities for the United States Navy and allied forces.

Eric Chewning, Executive Vice President of Maritime Systems and Corporate Strategy at HII, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, noting that the company achieved a 14% increase in shipbuilding output in 2025 and is targeting an additional 15% growth in 2026. He emphasised that working with technology-driven partners like Path Robotics will help maintain quality standards while improving production speed and scalability across shipyard facilities.
