A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of Indonesia on Sunday as a passenger ferry caught fire mid-voyage, leaving at least five people dead and several others injured. The vessel, reportedly carrying more than 200 passengers, was en route from Southeast Sulawesi’s Kendari port to Banggai Island in Central Sulawesi when the fire broke out.

According to local authorities, the blaze erupted suddenly and quickly engulfed the upper deck of the ferry. Distress signals were sent out immediately, prompting a swift rescue response from the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and local fishermen in the area.

“Five passengers were found deceased. Fortunately, over 180 people were rescued alive,” said a spokesperson from Basarnas. Rescue efforts were carried out using nearby boats and helicopters. Many survivors had jumped into the sea as flames spread, clinging to life vests and debris until help arrived.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest it may have started in the engine room due to a suspected fuel leak. Safety protocols and the condition of the vessel are also being examined as part of the official probe.

Survivors, some of whom suffered from burns and smoke inhalation, have been transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have yet to release the identities of the victims, but most passengers were domestic travelers returning from holiday.

Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, relies heavily on maritime transportation. However, ferry accidents are not uncommon due to aging fleets, poor enforcement of safety standards, and frequent overloading.

The Ministry of Transportation has pledged a thorough investigation and promised stricter safety enforcement on ferry operations moving forward.
