The Battery as a Service (BaaS) concept was first popularised in India by JSW MG Motor India. This model played a major role in boosting the popularity of the MG Windsor EV, which is currently among the best-selling electric vehicles in the country.

Under the BaaS system, customers do not purchase the battery outright. Instead, they lease it and pay a fixed rental charge based on usage. This significantly reduces the upfront cost of the vehicle.

Following this trend, Maruti Suzuki has also adopted the BaaS model for the eVitara. At present, only a few EVs in India support this system, including the eVitara, Windsor EV, and MG ZS EV.

Price Comparison Under BaaS

With the BaaS option, the Maruti eVitara is priced between ₹10.99 lakh and ₹14.51 lakh (ex-showroom). This makes it one of the more affordable electric SUVs in its category.

Meanwhile, the MG Windsor EV is available at prices ranging from ₹9.99 lakh to ₹13.99 lakh (ex-showroom) under the BaaS scheme. Battery rental charges for the Windsor typically fall between ₹3.9 per km and ₹4.5 per km.

For buyers who prefer to own the battery, the Windsor EV is priced between ₹14 lakh and ₹18.5 lakh (ex-showroom) without BaaS. However, it is important to note that the Windsor offers relatively smaller battery packs of 38 kWh and 52.9 kWh.
